Birth Preparation in
Late Pregnancy and Postpartum
Acupuncture to prepare the body for labour is commonly recommended by Midwives
At your pre-birth Acupuncture session, we will discuss:
The positioning of your baby
Any signs that labour is close
Some Acupressure techniques and other ideas to assist with your labour
Normalising physiological birth
The treatment aims are:
To ease some of the discomfort of late pregnancy
To prepare the pelvis for the birth
Calming to the nervous system
To soften the cervix
Treatment can begin at any time between 36 and 41 weeks gestation. To get the best out of the treatment weekly or twice weekly sessions are recommended.
This UK study had the following to say regarding Acupuncture in Birth Preparation
“Numerous studies provide evidence for the effects of acupuncture in normalising pregnancy and birth. These effects include musculoskeletal preparation of the pelvis, cervical ripening, enhancing endogenous oxytocin release, and analgesic properties.” “Our analysis shows that women who received birth preparation acupuncture had fewer surgical births, required less intrapartum analgesia, less components of induction of labour and had a reduced length of hospital stay, supporting the use of maternity acupuncture in normalising birth outcomes.”
